Lace and lace products
The production of lace fabrics, borders and appliqués is one of the most elaborate production areas in textile manufacturing. Lace, as an accessory or outer fabric for elaborately produced dresses and gowns, has also been a means of representation since the Renaissance at the latest, although the filigree fabrics handmade by bobbin lace or embroidery were always expensive luxury goods. Industrialization led to the machine production of lace fabrics in the 19th century. Production constantly required new pattern ideas, which could be reproduced easily and in high quality using photographic processes. The resulting pattern books record numerous examples of lace patterns as they were created in the manufacturing centers in Brussels, Valencienne, Plauen and others.
