Authority file service for art
From 2024, arthistoricum.net will also include an ‘Authority file service for art’ to support the inclusion of entities (persons, institutions, subject headings, work titles, etc.) in the Integrated Authority File (GND).
This service is aimed at researchers and scientists, as well as cultural heritage institutions in the fields of art history, design and photography, who identify required but missing authority records in the Integrated Authority File (GND) as part of cataloguing and research projects, but who are not autorised to edit in the GND.
Since 2014 Heidelberg University Library has been systematically creating and improving authority records for works in the GND for the art history community with great synergy effects, for example in the area of GND authority records for graphic works, for example in cooperation with the ‘Graphik vernetzt’ Working Group.
In addition, the need for the creation or improvement of domain-specific GND authority data also arises in the context of arthistoricum.net's diverse content-related collaborations with scholars, such as the creation of specialist bibliographies, digital editions, image collections or retro-digitised focus materials of the historical collection. At the request of these cooperation partners, but also of other interested scholars, the Heidelberg University Library takes on authority file work.
arthistoricum.net thus actively supports the free availability of research and collection data for the art history / art studies community in the Integrated Authority File (GND) and publication in international reference systems, e.g. the Virtual International Authority File ( VIAF). By providing in-depth standard data, the FID makes a significant contribution to fulfilling the FAIR principles for digital collections.
The activities are part of the ‘Network Arts and Culture’ authority file work of the FID system.
