Heidelberg University Library records and subject catalogues illustrations and caricatures from the following satire periodicals and caricatures from the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71) and the Paris Commune in its image database HeidICON: La Caricature, Charivari, L'Éclipse, Le Fifre, Le Fils du Père Duchêne, Le Grelot, La Lune, Le Rire, La revue comique, Le Sifflet und La Scie. as well as the Collection de caricatures et de charges pour servir à l'histoire de la guerre et de la révolution de 1870-1871, a collection of caricatures and pamphlets in nine volumes from the bequest of London bookseller N. Trübner. The illustrations from the 19th and early 20th century document the beginning of illustrated satirical press as well as its development covering several decades. They are freely accessible online and can be searched using different search parameters.The era in which the images in question were produced comprises eminent historical events such as the Revolution of 1848, the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War. The indexing is undertaken by Heidelberg University Library with the financial support of the DFG (German Research Fondation) in the context of the project "Digitalisierung und Erschließung illustrierter Kunst- und Satirezeitschriften des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts" and "Die europäische Perspektive: Digitalisierung und Erschließung ausländischer Kunst- und Satirezeitschriften des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts" (currently under construction).
