Von diesem Augenblick an lernte Gronowski emsig, mit Leidenschaft Lettern zeichnen; und so kam es, daß die Lettern, welche durch allerhand Renaissance- und Barock-Einflüsse hindurch bei der schlichten Form der Letter von heute angelangt waren, sidi von da aus zu der charakteristischen Gronowski-Letter entwickel ten. Der grundsätzliche Wert dieser Letter be steht darin, daß der ganze Nachdruck auf ihre Lesbarkeit, ihre Einfachheit gelegt wird, ferner darin, daß in ihrer Ausführung eine ganz beson dere Sorglichkeit in Erscheinung tritt: die Letter wird geradezu erotisch als Thema behandelt. Später kehrte Gronowski nur noch selten zum Buchschmuck zurück, denn all seine Energie und schöpferische Kraft wandte er dem Plakat zu, hierbei einen individuellen Typus kreierend. Zugleich mit einer großen Mannigfaltigkeit der Einfälle und Entwürfe sehen wir eine große Leichtigkeit der Striche und Flecken, viel Frische in der Linienführung und einen deutlich hervor tretenden graphischen Witz in der Erfassung des Grundthemas. Die Komposition einer jeden Zeichnung Gronowskis ist grundsätzlich eine sehr glückliche; was an ihr auf fällt, ist die voll kommene Ausnützung des Kompositionsrah mens, die Unwiderruflichkeit der einmal gezo- ment on, Gronowski learned to limn letters with passion; and so it came about that the letters which had developed by way of all kinds of Renaissance and baroque influences to the simple alphabets of to-day developed themselves further to the characteristic Gro nowski alphabet. The fundamental value of this lettering depends upon the fact that the whole emphasis is laid upon its legibility, its simplicity, and further that it is executed with meticulous care; the letter as a theme is treated with a tenderness that is almost erotic. Later Gronowski very seldom returned to book decoration, for he turned all his energies and his Creative powers to the poster, creating thereby an individual type. Wefind the greatest variety of ideas and -designs combined with an airy lightness of stroke and in the apportion- ing of the space, a very fresh handling of the lines and a clearly-defined graphic wittiness in the comprehension of the initial theme. The composition of every one of Gronowski’s draw- ings is fundamentally good; the points that strike one most are the utilization of the space as a whole, the irrevocability of each line, once it is drawn, the lack of superfluous ornament, such as is so apt to disturb one in the work of 36
