Wilhelm Metzig, both as an artist and a man, is far from being so arrogant. The whole of his artistic energies are devoted to giving a good form to articles of daily use. He is an energetic Opponent of what is banal. For him nothing is too small and no article too cheap for him not to exert his entire abilities with all seriousness. He takes delight in gracious lines and delicate shades. The idea contained is always circumscribed by an aesthetic prin- ciple, and that is why his work contains many more factors which can help to form a style than work which is intentionally meant to introduce a style of the day.
