E.R.W61SS E. R. Weiß will be sixty on the 12th October 1935. When we remember that he began to make his mark when he was twenty, we realize that the period of his activities coincides exactly with the period of the revival of applied and graphic art. E. R. Weiß writes as follows regarding his own work: "As an inexperienced youth I took an apparently innate pleasure and passionate interest in the form of books, and everything connected with it, but especially in beautiful expressive lettering. This is still a pleasure to me today. Not long ago I copied some bold lettering, which appeared admirable to me, from the scroll on an old German picture. I have copied Latin script from old Roman monuments, Renaissance Scripts, Gothic lettering and enchanting baroque script with elab- orate flourishes from tombstones. I studied the Greek script when I engraved copperplates of the poems of the immortal Sappho. I have designed letters, lines, and whole pages from beautiful book titles. All this is now to be found in numerous works on the forms of script of all ages. Hence the younger generation are no longer so strenuous in their endeavours, for everything is made easy for them.
