Wood engraving artistic effect is enhanced by the skilful use of allegory and subdued form. His method of dealing with the surface is particuiarly pleasing. A close association with wood- cuts has resulted in work which is true to form and at times well coloured and in good taste. His manifold work in miniature is excellent. This achievement is due to his striving after clarity of form and this has been crowned with the best conceivable results. The solidity which is always recogniz- able in his work prevents irrelevant de- partures, but in no way hinders the full play of his imagination. This is seen at its best in his book and magazine jackets. This same characteristic, suggesting practical use, is seen in all his printed matter. Schardt emphasizes the essential, and in so far as possible, allows it to speak for itself. His lettering is expressive of the whole which, in so far as attainable, is a complete unity. Here we make the very welcome acquaintance of the commercial graphic artist "par excellence". Transl.by James Caswell
