clear-cut designs have found extensive practical application or that they have received well merited honours. Hermann Schardt was awarded the Dürer Prize in 1935. He was an instructor at the Folkwang School of the City of Essen. It must have been a real pleasure to study under a man who is not only well grounded in the fundamentals of his profession, but who is also able to illustrate them by examples from his own practical experience. His residence in the centre of the German industrial district has not been without influence on his style and the subjects of his work. His subjects are often dry but he has the gift of inspiring even the most unpromising material with attraction. At the same time, he confines himself within reasonable limits, eschewing all innovations of which he has not a complete technical and artistic mastery.
