Sucht der Schriftgießeralles ausseinemgeschaffenen Material zu formen, so hat der Papierfabrikant wiederum ein großes Interesse daran, seinen Kunden zu zeigen, daß seine Papiere mit dem Material des Setzkastens vollkommen ausreichend repräsentativ dekoriert werden können. In typographischer Hinsicht vorbildlich für Amerika erscheinen mir — ganz abgesehen vom Pa ä pier — die Proben der Japan Paper Company in NewYork, Philadelphia und Boston. In der Durch* arbeitung sind sie immer einwandfrei, selbst wenn bei ihnen die für uns unverständliche Vorliebe für Renaissance «Ornamente zum Vorschein kommt. Die Künstler, welche diese ästhetisch reizvollen Seiten arrangierten, nennen wir unter den jewei* ligen Abbildungen. Sie dokumentieren alle eine vorzügliche Haltung und Geschmackskultur. The type*founder, to be sure, seeks to shape everything out of his own ma* terial, whereas the paper*manufacturer displays a great interest in showing his Customers that his papers may be decorated in the füllest and most representative manner by the medium of the type* setter’s case. Models of American typograhy in this respect —quite apart from the paper itself—are to me the samples of the Japan PaperCompany of NewYork, Philadelphia and Boston. They are always beyond criticism in the get*up, even though the love of Renaissance Ornaments—so inexplicable to us Ger* mans—is constantly in evidence. The names of the designers who arranged these successful and artistic pages are given under each illustration. They are all of them evidence of a fine attitude in art and of a true cultivated taste.
