Der Plan des Ganzen aber und die Art der Anbrin gung des Textes oder derUnterschrift zeugt von einem sorgfältigen Durchdenken der Komposi tion und einer geschickten Handhabung des Ma terials. Demgemäß sind seine Buchstaben, seine Inschriften organisch mit der Komposition ver wachsen, Inschrift und Zeichnung atmen ein ge meinsames Leben, der Buchstabe ist auf das Sorgfältigste als Schmuck der Zeichnung ver arbeitet. Gronowski ist ein Meister in der An wendung reiner Farben, mit denen er sehr be trächtliche Wirkungen erzielt, wozu ihm die kenntnisreiche Art der Verteilung der Farben über dieFläche behilflich ist. SeineLeidenschaft aber bleibt ein für allemal die Letter und somit auch der Druck als Ganzes, an welchem man die zärtliche Sorgfalt des Künstlers erkennt. Man darf getrost sagen: so wie Wladyslaw Skoczylas der Schöpfer des modernen polni schen Holzschnittes ist, so nimmt Gronowski un ter den Schöpfern des polnischen Plakats eine führende Stellung ein; sein Einfluß auf die künstlerische Produktion auf diesem Gebiet ist bedeutend, sowohl inbezug auf Zeichnung, Kom position und Kolorit als auch insbesondere other artists, and the expert use of occasional patch of white as if it were a color. The plan of the whole, however, and the manner in which the text or the title is used, betrays a careful thinking-out of the composition and a clever use of the material. His lettering is all in ac- cordance, the most careful has grown to be part of the decoration of the drawing. The inscrip- tion and the design breathe a life in common, the lettering is most carefully employed to de- corate the drawing. Gronowski is a master in the use of pure colour, and achieves very con- siderable effects by this means, whereby his knowledge of the art of distributing the colours over the surface stands him in good stead. Lettering, however, is and remains his peculiar passion, and thus he is entranced by the print- ing as a whole, and in his treatment of it one recognizes the tenderly careful hand of the true artist. One may well say, that just as Wladyslav Skoczylas is the creator of the modern Polish wood-cut, so Gronowski takes a leading place among the creators of Polish posters. He has had considerable influence upon artistic production in this sphere, wether in relation to the drawing, composition or colouring, or espe- cially in relation to the forthrightness and sim- plicity of the lettering. 37
