Peter Fergusson PhD Scholarship in English Medieval Architecture (Link)

The Courtauld is delighted to announce a new fully funded PhD scholarship in English

medieval architecture, starting in September 2026. Architecture is understood broadly to

encompass the built environment, from infrastructure, urban design and domestic

buildings to churches, castles and cathedrals, but may also include architectural

representation or micro-architecture. Eligible projects should focus on England in the

period between the eleventh and early sixteenth centuries.

The scholarship is made available thanks to a generous bequest by Professor Peter

Fergusson (1934-2022), an internationally recognised scholar of medieval architecture. The

scholarship includes full home or international tuition fees, as well as an annual stipend

of £22,780 to support the costs of living in London. There is also an annual allowance of

£1000 to support travel for research purposes, and the possibility of financial support for

the scholar to organise a conference in their final year of study.

Ankündigung des Mittelrhein-Museums Koblenz, Link

1845 unternahm die britische Königin Victoria mit ihrem deutschen Prinzgemahl Albert von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha eine Kreuzfahrt auf dem Rhein. Von der romantischen Flusslandschaft überwältigt, schrieb sie über den Drachenfels in ihr Tagebuch: „Too beautiful!“. Die beiden Royals waren aber keineswegs die ersten Briten am Rhein. 2024 jährt sich auch der Todestag von Lord Byron zum 200. Mal, dessen Dichtungen dem Rhein zu ungeahnter Popularität verhalfen. Dies gab den äußeren Anlass für eine Ausstellung, in der sich das Mittelrhein- Museum und das Siebengebirgsmuseum Königswinter gemeinsam der Entdeckung der Rheinlandschaft durch britische Touristen und Künstler im 19. Jahrhundert widmen. Dem Rheinlauf folgend zeigen Bilder britischer Künstler die wichtigen Stationen der Reisenden entlang des Rheins. Neben Gemälden und Aquarellen bekannter Künstler wie Clarkson Stanfield, Samuel Prout und David Roberts sowie William Turner sind Karikaturen zu sehen, die die Reiseleidenschaft der Briten dokumentieren und die eine bis heute nachwirkende Wahrnehmung der typischen Touristen begründeten.

Wenngleich diese bekannten englischen Maler und Schriftsteller das heutige Bild von den Engländern am Rhein geprägt haben, so gehörte das Gros doch ganz anderen Berufsgruppen an. Ein Ziel des Ausstellungsvorhabens ist es, den Blick zu weiten und neben den Erlebnissen der Berühmtheiten auch charakteristische Episoden mit weniger bekannten Protagonisten zu erzählen. Die Ausstellung soll die Reiseerfahrungen von Frauen ebenso wie die von Männern berücksichtigen, Typisches wie Außergewöhnliches schildern.
