Portraits of artists until 1900

The starting point for this cataloguing project was the exhibition "Platz da im Pantheon!" which took place at the ZI Munich in 2019. There, for the first time, printed portraits of artists in portrait series up to 1800 were examined in a comprehensive exhibition. These range from the earliest woodcut portraits in books from the late 15th century to the numerous books of portraits from the 16th century to the English magazines from the end of the 18th century, which were published in large numbers. In 2021, the second part of the exhibition took place under the title "Pantheon and Boulevard. Artists in 19th century portrait series. Prints and Photography". Here, the portraits of artists in print and photographic series of the 19th century are presented, thus focusing on a period in which the perception and (self-)representation of artists changed in many respects just as decisively as the dispositif of the media.

In addition, numerous other volumes with portraits of artists from the holdings of Heidelberg University Library, the Zentralinstituts für Kunstgeschichte in Munich and private collections will be digitised and made available online, partly with the support of the DFG.
