Heidelberg University Library offers researchers at Heidelberg University and Heidelberg University Publishing (heiUP) the opportunity to publish e-journals free of charge in open access. This also applies to researchers worldwide in the fields of art history (arthistoricum.net), classical studies (Propylaeum) and South Asian studies (FID4SA). Heidelberg University Library provides support for setting up new journals, ensures the sustainability of published content and maximises its visibility. A total of approximately 170 e-journals are currently hosted.

Heidelberg University Library is part of the ‘Servicestelle Diamond Open Access (SeDOA)’ consortium.

In addition, since 2024, Heidelberg University Library has been offering all FID-operating libraries and research institutions a comprehensive hosting service for the production and publication of e-journals using the open source software from Open Journal System (OJS) as part of the ‘FID Network’. The aim is to support the cooperating FID teams in setting up corresponding service offerings through knowledge and technology transfer and to enable them to participate in the ongoing developments in Heidelberg. The plan is for the FID teams to take over the coordination and editorial support of the publishers in direct contact with their respective specialist communities.

OJS maps the entire editorial review and publication process for the publication of an electronic journal. This means that every step, from the submission of an article to the organisation of the peer review and the publication of individual issues, can be conveniently handled via a web browser. The OJS interface is available in several languages.

The offer includes, among other things:

• Hosting of OJS in the version used at Heidelberg University Library (currently 3.4)
• Training of the cooperating FID teams in editorial support, journal website design, etc.
• First-level support for the FID team with application questions
• Option of PDF and HTML publications (heiPUBLISHING)
• Long-term archiving (via DNB)
• Connection to VG-Wort
• Link to ORCID
• DOI assignment
• ISSN assignment
• Transfer of article cataloguing to the union catalogue
